Dressing Up: Tips to Remember
What Kind of Skirts for Bachata?
For the ladies - if you’d like to elevate your look with a glamorous dress, do it as long as the dress doesn't hike up or expose more than you're comfortable exposing. Nothing too short, too thick, or too constricting.
Tight skirts aren’t as comfortable when you’re dancing the bachata because the material isn’t as stretchy as, say, a flowy skirt. This kind of skirt tends to hike up too, especially when you’re bending the knees and spreading the legs as you dance. You’d be spending the rest of the night pulling your skirt down.
Knee-length skirts are also fine but depending on the movement, the material could get stuck in between the legs. If you want to go short, go for it but wear boy shorts underneath or spandex shorts. Leggings, jeans, jeggings, shorts (not booty shorts) are also fantastic choices for bachata outfits but be sure that the fit is good enough that you won't have to adjust the clothing every time you do a spin, body roll, or dip.
What Types of Tops for Bachata?
Dancing will make you sweat buckets so a top that's made with a breathable, lightweight material is perfect for the occasion. We suggest tops made with cotton material because it keeps the skin nice and cool even when it's hot and humid. V-neck tops, tank tops, halter tops, a simple t-shirt, even a ruffly top are perfect for bachata. Anything strapless, like a tube top, should be worn with caution. The top tends to slide down and you don't want your bra showing while dancing.
The same thing with backless tops, these tend to expose the skin where your sweaty dance partner's hands go. And it's not like wiping off the sweat and grime is easy Tops made with super delicate materials or those that get caught easily should be avoided when you're dancing in general. Knits, lacy tops, crochet tops, etc., should be avoided because the material could get caught on a button or a buckle and rip a hole.
What Types of Dresses for Bachata
For dresses, anything that's not too clingy, tight, delicate, short, or high-maintenance is perfect for bachata nights. The skirt of the dress should be loose enough so you can bend your knees or spread your legs with ease. The top of the dress should be breathable, secured with straps with a nice fit so you can dance without fear of exposing your bra in the process.
Finding the right outfit for bachata nights might be overwhelming to some but as long as you focus on comfort, support, and coverage, you’re good to go. Bachata is an upbeat dance style so clothes that give you freedom of movement and range of motion are the best choices. If the dress or skirt falls weird in certain places, if it makes you too self-conscious, or it rides up like crazy, don't wear it because this will only ruin the experience. As for the Latin dance shoes, hey, you know we got your back!
